braids&dry skin

topic posted Sat, December 20, 2003 - 7:43 AM by  Jennifer
Whenever I braid up my hair or do lots of little ponytails, my head after a couple of days gets really itchy and and full of dry skin.

Does anyone know any solutions to this problem such that I could keep my hairdo longer than 3-4 days?

i haven't personally had this problem, but let's see if we can find the source. do you wash it when it's in these little braids? i'm wondering if that might aggravate the problem.

no, i suppose that people with braids DO wash their hair. i just know that when my head is freshly shaved after not being shaved for a while it gets pretty flaky. i'm not sure how this is related... but somehow i thought it was. i don't tend to wash my hair when my head is shaved... and i kinda assumed (from that cool picture of yours) that your head was partly shaved. but this was an erroneous assumption?

i know that people often use "moisture" stuff in their hair when putting the braids in. i wonder if this would help.

        or perhaps a special shampoo?

i'm sorry, as i type this i'm realizing that i'm not as knowledgeable as I thought.

When I first got my dreadlocks, I was told to expect some serious dandruff initially, and they said this was due to the scalp not being manipulated the way it normally was (being brushed and the like). I used to take some fresh rosemary, boil it in a big pot of water, and add a drop or two of tea tree oil. When it cooled, I used it as a rinse after washing my hair (just leave the rosemary rinse in, though, don't wash it out). This really seemed to help with any dandruff or itch, and it makes your hair smell really good.
